CAP: Coaching Accreditation Program

Planning CAP Instruction in the OVR for 2010

Once again we want to try and hold a regionally hosted CAP Level I and II along with VCAP. Last year we were not able to hold a clinic due to a lack of interest in attendance.

First, the USAV pricing structure for these clinics is such that the more people we guarantee will attend, the cheaper it is for everyone. Several years ago we had over 150 coaches attend and the cost for registration was under $200 for 2 full days of classroom and on-court instruction!

I personally believe that the best time to host one of these clinics is early in January, particularly January 9,10 or 16,17. I know everyone wants the clinic in their back yard so they don't have to travel, however, it is logistially better to hold the clinic in the central Ohio area so that all region members are within several hours driving distance and airport proximity for clinic instructor travel.

These are my thoughts. I definitely want your imput as director of your club as to what would be best for you. If we're going to do a clinic this year, it's important to get it on the books ASAP.

Certification Requirements for Juniors' Coaches

The Ohio Valley Region requires that all coaches are either IMPACT- or CAP-certified before they begin working with players in practices or tournaments. All expired CAP certifications will be listed in the OVR database as INACTIVE. An inactive certification status means that the coach cannot continue on to the next CAP certification until the current one is re-activated. The inactive certification, however, still fulfills the IMPACT requirement for coaching club teams in the OVR. Coaches that are hired/retained before their club season begins must be IMPACT- or CAP-certified before their first contact with players. If coaches are hired/retained mid-season due to extenuating circumstances, they must be IMPACT- or CAP- certified that season if they are hired/retained before the last clinic in the region. If they are hired/retained after the last clinic, then they must be IMPACT- or CAP- certified before their first contact with players the following season.

All CAP certifications (Level I, II, III) are good for only 4 years. The certification/recertification process is managed solely by USAV and they make all decisions regarding it. All CAP certifications should have a certification or issue date which starts the clock for the certification 4-year life span. USAV will notify individuals directly when they have met the requirements for renewal of a current certification as well as receiving the next level certification. All expired certifications are considered by USAV to be no longer valid, meaning that the coach no longer has that certification. USAV recommends that we somehow mark these as "inactive" rather than simply deleting them from the database. The reason for the "inactive" designation is because an inactive or expired CAP certification does count as an active IMPACT certification by USAV standards.

Overview of CAP

Note: You must be Level 1 accredited to attend Level 2.

CAP Courses

Registration must be done through USA Volleyball at http://www.usavolleyball.org/content/index/2605.

OVR CAP courses

The OVR will not host a regional USAV CAP Level I or II clinic in May or June 2009. There has been virtually no interest expressed in attending during these months. We will look again at hosting in December or January just prior to the start of next year's club season.
