Introductory Remarks [Bob Price]
Bob focused on the need for adequate time to resolve region issues, possibly requiring a fourth scheduled meeting each year. Today's meeting is an emergency meeting required to address outstanding issues.
Championship Events [Linda Logan – Director of Columbus Sports Commission]
Linda now represents GCCC, Nationwide Arena, etc.
The new Sports Facility Guide, published every 2 years, features a photo of OVR Junior Championships from several years ago on its cover.
The Early Bird Extravaganza (Chip Reilly) will be hosted at GCCC starting in 2003 over Presidents' Day weekend.
April 2003: NIRSA will be at GCCC. Sharing the facility with our Adult Regionals, this constitutes significant exposure for the OVR.
Hotels [Linda Logan, Ron Wyzynski]
Valerie Gillespie is now the contact for the Hyatt Regency, responsible for arranging our room blocks.
Maintaining/increasing our bed count is highly desirable useful for preserving our access to the convention center.
Officials will probably be accommodated in the Hyatt next year as well (discussion may continue in August).
2002 Junior Championships Update [Bob Price, Ron Wyzynski]
For the first weekend of this year's Championships at the Convention Center, over 270 teams participated. There were only 2 no-shows. [Participants included 13s, 14C, and some 15C – Ed.]
Whether to again allow six 3-team pools on 4 courts was discussed, with the eventual consensus favoring letting as many teams play as possible.
Registration Update [Ron Wyzynski]
12,400 members were registered, paid for, and transmitted at the end of April. More boys' teams are expected. [Past 12,550 by June 7 – Ed.]
Sales
Preliminary indications are that Q-Sport's sponsorship, production, and staffing constitute a strongly positive arrangement for all concerned. Members and parents were pleased with the design. Discussion to be resumed in August.
Kent State [Ron Wyzynski]
Kent State is renovating the building. They would like us as a regular weekend client for the next few years.
Regional Referees' Chairperson [Bob Price]
Rick tendered his resignation effective at the end of this season. Rick's term expires in 2004.
Emi recommended that an interim appointment be made to maintain the 3-year cycle.
Bob Price: motion to appoint a person to fulfill Rick's term. Second: Keith.
- In favor of "Interim Referees' Chairperson": 11. Abstained: 1. Motion passed.
Rick nominated Brian Hemelgarn. Bob D. seconded.
Discussion ensued regarding Brian's many roles with USA Volleyball and the OVR. The board was confident in Brian's qualifications, and Brian made clear his commitment to the office and to the region.
Bob Price: motion to appoint Brian Hemelgarn as the Interim Referees' Chairperson. Glenn: second. Unanimous: 11 votes in favor [Bill was necessarily occupied elsewhere in the GCCC with preparations for the Junior Championships]. Motion passed.
August Retreat [Bob Dickenson]
Agenda items should be sent to Bob Dickenson and to Nick by July 1 to allow time for Bob to develop an efficient schedule.
Junior 2nd Officials' Patch [Bob Dickenson]
The juniors' patch is the next step of Al's junior officials' development program. Two candidate designs were circulated. We will revisit this discussion in August.
Awards [Brian Hemelgarn, Emi Vishoot]
Ron is the recipient of the 2001 USAV Outstanding Service Award
Region awards: The awards committee has criteria for all awards. Nominations are due by the beginning of August. Brian will send the award criteria for the June newsletter.
Bob Price is recommending the following individuals to USAV for Lindsay meritorious awards: Keith, Terry, Emi, Hank, Yoon, Scott Garver.
High Performance [Don Burroughs]
HP tryouts will be held this weekend using available courts tomorrow at 10:30 tomorrow morning (accommodate prom, etc.) and also after pool play as courts open up (Junior team: 17s). Tryouts for the younger team will be on Sunday.
Both teams will participate in the Salt Lake Volley Classic.
- Divisions: 12 HP youth, 12 HP junior, 6 college; international format.
We are still seeking an acceptable site for hosting our 14-and-Under High Performance Camp.
3:50 – Motion to adjourn: Bob Price. Seconded: Keith Burke.
