Understanding the rules is only one aspect of being an successful volleyball referee. Clear
signals, managing the game and the court between sets and matches, working with the rest of
the officiating crew, acting with a high standard of ethics and fairness, and various other
nuances, go into being a professional volleyball referee. Well-trained, well-prepared referees
add value to the sport, earning the respect of players, coaches, and spectators alike. The
quality of an event is directly related to the professionalism and integrity of the assigned
referees.
Just as becoming a skilled player requires dedication and competition, becoming a skilled
referee requires commitment and training. In the OVR, returning referees who held a
certification the previous year are required to attend a pre-season rules clinic annually. These
clinics may be in person at various locations/dates around the region, or they may be virtual
(online). Use the Professional Referee Clinics link below to sign up.
Clinics for Junior Officials (second referees, scorers, and line judges) may also be requested by
club directors using the form below.
For your convenience, USAV referee training opportunities are listed when available.
